Used to being the big fish in a little pond, Bakuou’s entire sense of self is shattered when he sees Todoroki freeze an entire building like it’s nothing. It’s not drawn heavy attention to, but Bakugou has a full on identity crisis after coming to UA. Bakugou approaches every fight like he’s up against someone at his level or superior, and never counts an opponent out no matter how they might appear. He might insult them, but it’s more to get under their skin. While Bakugou will dismiss others as losers, background extras, and side characters, he never ever talks down to those he’s facing, at least not during a fight. Bakugou also displays a healthy respect for his opponents. Bakugou chastises his middle school friends for even suggesting things like playing hooky from school, smoking, or drinking because it could ruin his future, and he’s not about to risk everything he’s worked so hard for. While Bakugou first comes across as a vulgar bastard (and he is), Bakugou also believes in hard work, applies himself, and is the top of the class not because of raw talent, but because Bakugou trains and studies hard to be at the top. So then, why is the human embodiment of rage so popular? The answer is really very simple.

And yet, ever since the second popularity poll onward, Bakugou has been the #1 most popular character in the series, beating out the protagonist and human cinnamon roll, Midoriya, by a landslide in every vote. Bakugou is many things: vulgar, foul-mouthed, proud, hypercompetitive, socially inept, and frothing with rabies.
